This activity is centred on world preservation through clean energy usage. This led to the ignition of our pupil’s research and enquiry skills thriving on the application of scientific principles, curating in the idea to build a solar powered warmer and oven. Leveraging their understanding of several physics, chemistry, and mathematics and economics concept. The solar oven work using solar radiation from the sun.

Making a solar oven as an alternative to electrical oven that burn gas is based meeting the sustainable development goal SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) as the oven is both affordable and small it doesn’t acquire burning any gas, it is also clean. The component of the solar oven includes a plane mirror working on the law of reflection in physics by reflecting radiant light incident on the mirror. A glass cover working on the principle of refraction traps the heat incident and reflected by the mirror in the oven.

The mathematical concept of measurement and inclination angle played a pivotal role in the making of the box and adjuster respectively. Styrofoam and additives made from chemical compounds reacted as pupils fixed them in the light weight wood. Also notably amongst all the activity was the collaboration with the Waste recycling ISA activity 6 to obtain re-useable waste materials such as woods, Styrofoam, glass and mirror piece which are needed in the construction of the solar oven.

  1. Utilization of solar radiation being a great store of renewable and clean
  2. Designing an oven that is environmentally friendly and economically affordable for those in rural communities and internally displaced persons where electricity supply is limited or non-existent.
  3. Ultimately ensuring our world is preserved for the future generation next via production of equipment with little or no greenhouse gas emission.
  1. The production of a solar powered
  2. Affordable and environmentally friendly solar oven with no greenhouse
  3. A preserved world

The success of this activity was deduced from the experimental usage of the oven during a sunny day to ensure food inserted into the oven was warmed through the heat trapped inside the solar oven. The temperature of the food was not only increased but preserved.

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: PRESERVING OUR WORLD FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH CLEAN ENERGY – A CALL TO ACTION

YEAR GROUP: 12 – 13

DATE: 25 – 03 – 2024

I enjoyed working with my peers to get the activity done.

I learnt a lot about solar and renewable energy sources getting the concept of the project was really captivating and eye opening.

I had to miss some classes to practice and get the activity done.

I would like to decorate the solar oven with paint or add stickers on it to beautify it.

This activity has exposed the pupils to some applications of science like the principle of the plane mirror, heat conservation and energy sources (the solar energy) and their impact.

This activity has given me the opportunity to have better practical understanding of the impact of using clean energy on the environment.

This activity has generally enlighten the school on the need to cut down the use of non-clean energy which cause health risk to lives and consider clean energy

The most effective part of the activity was the construction, this part involves handling some items that could cause injury and cause injury and every forms of safety were applied, we had no injury. Use of sun glasses to prevent direct sun’s reflection and other safety mechanisms.

It was indeed a great project built with the aim of ensuring our world is preserved for future generations through the reduction of emission of greenhouse gases, resulting in a safe environment as we increase usage of equipment built to use clean energy sources.

This activity fostered curiosity and creativity in the students. It taught them practical skills and reinforcing learning through experience by exploring suitable solutions to preserving our world through clean energy like solar energy, students developed a deeper understanding of environmental issues and the importance of renewable resources.

This activity inspired me to become very environmentally conscious. Witnessing the tangible results of the efforts of the students instilled a sense of accomplishment and motivation to continue integrating experiential learning into the curriculum.

Engaging students in activities like this not only fostered hand-on learning but it also instilled environmental awareness and problem solving skills. It sparked curiosity about renewable energy and sustainability in the minds of students and staff. This can also lead to a broader discussion and initiative within the school community.

The project embarked on in this activity (making a solar oven) was a very good idea and the student completed it with much creativity and brilliance. However, for future projects they could experiment with different designs, experimenting various reflective surfaces.

Engaging students in these kind of activity not only teaches them about renewable energy and sustainability but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. It was a great experience being part of this activity.

This activity (project) had a positive and constructive impact on my daughter. She was the course of the activity creative in her thinking, always seeking ideas by asking science based questions. It indeed opened her mind to new possibilities and also deepened her knowledge of scientific concept and how they are applied in the real world.

I was not directly involved in this project but from the information I gathered from my daughter, I’ve been enlightened on the dangers of unclean energy and the usefulness of clean energy.

I think the project can be done in a larger scale next time

This is a welcome idea in schools. I think such activities will go a long way in bringing out the creativeness in children.
